  • I wouldn't be so unhappy if, 1. There were options to buy a 'standalone' phone and options to buy a phone with charger bundle, and 2. They would pass on the savings to the consumer. But 1 clearly isn't happening, and 2... you just *know* these companies are going to pocket the difference. Ironically, I am bothered by components and electronics and stuff that come pre-packaged with additional parts that I already have from some other source and can re-use, and wish I could just buy the item standalone. Like when I bought USB charging boards for my old HTC One M8, I had to replace the board twice through its lifetime because the charge port died on it. Inexpensive repair if you know what you're doing and it got me a few extra years of life out of my old smartphone for the equivalent of a few fast food meals. Considering that phone was worth $600 when it was new, it was totally worth it. The problem was, both boards came with an ifixit kit. The first one was useful, but the second one was redundant because I still had the repair tools from the previous one, which results in waste. That bothers me. USB charging cables though, you can almost never have too many of those. Sometimes cables go bad, and in my case I have both a home and a work computer; I can just leave the charging cables plugged into both, and I can charge my phone and other compatible electronics onsite without having to carry the cables around with me. I almost never use wall outlet charging, however, because I have rather limited outlet space, both at home and work. EDIT: As for headphones, by principle I prefer phones to have the headphone jack (and I'm glad my current daily driver -- a Moto Z4 -- has one), though I never use the jack myself because I've had a long history of getting wired headphones caught on stuff and getting damaged, or the earphones going out. It's just so wasteful. I mostly stick to wireless rechargeable headphones but I'm not sold on the detached ones as I'm concerned about losing something that small. I stick with wireless earbuds that are tethered to one another, but despite the fact I had to shell out a lot for mine, they wound up being well worth it in the end. Considering how long the pairs I got last me. Don't need to mess around with cords and cables, and can connect them to almost anything. EDIT 2: Oh yeah, also, neither of these phones came with free cases, though both were bought at my carrier's store. We had to buy the cases separately though they were at least in stock in the same store.

No, Apple will not reduce the price just because they don't include the charger. Know why? Because Apple knew people are morons.

So while some people might not buy these extras from the same company that the phone came from, a lot will. So these companies have increase profits, while the phone price stays the same or probably increases.

  • Not adding a charger is more environmentally damaging then including one. We are talking about huge companies who can afford to make more environmentally friendly chargers with recycled materials and such without having to go to a third party company that charges much less for a product that's more harmful. The reality is we need Chargers with phones. They do not last long because of wear and tear. Sure it sounds nice, but it is greedy and irresponsible.

  • I am surprised by the calculation, wireless chargers VS plugin.... that means for every 1 watt per cable, we are loosing 1.47 watt per wireless charging! So roughly speaking: With an average smartphone battery being 15watts of power (probably mkre), we will need 225 Mega watts more power every day to charge the 30mio smartphones (yearly sold probably exceeds that). That is roughly 2250 Telsa Model S 100KW Batteries worth of energy lost! Difficult to see the environmetally friendy part here! To all: please stop wasting our resources ;) they are limited and I wouldn't like the need for additional nuclear power plants!

  • I mostly agree with the cases made here but I would have liked to have seen considered the reduction of e-waste which is the big pro to this “no-charger” approach. Paper really isn’t a big deal as far as waste goes (deliveries might be decently big problems depending on various things, we are moving towards electric after all), but having people buy (and throw away) even half the chargers they would normally is HUGE if you factoring in the sheer amount of phones bought yearly. I’d gladly take twice as much paper to recycle over twice as much e-waste to just let sit there and pollute the planet.

  • Let's hope that this will change in year or two and people will fight against this by buying older phones what still have chargers and that companies will realize that they picked wrong way Also yeah, it's great that that new xiaomi will have charger, I am xiaomi user by myself and they really do high quality phones for acceptable price tho I think that samsung went that way because samsung and apple are sort of working together like samsung is making components for apple devices like ipads or macs etc and xiaomi is seperated doing stuff by themself so I think that that's reason why samsung joined them and xiaomi actually realized that following apple is not good step and let's hope that other companies won't follow this bad way what apple decided to go but they will actually think about customers and their needs

  • guys, trust me... I've tried wireless headphones, earphones, yadda, yadda... nothing compares to a decent pair of wired headphones. nothing. and if you want to make everyone happy, every company has to be publicly owned so you never get the removals of the ports, or no protective mask+screen, and you never get larger packaging. now, we get all these problems with privatized companies... imagine having water supply, electrical power supply from the grid, telecom infrastructure, gas, everything privatized... it would be a mess like no other. and trust me, there are countries that have greedily privatized some sectors that should've never been owned privately, and those countries' politicians sold them without transparency. go figure how those people who live in those countries feel. you get the idea. you just can't do this to the people. i hope every single person who invented privatization gets what deserves for their greed.

If you're between buying an eco-conscious product and a non-eco-conscious product then sure, get the eco-conscious one, but if you get up and go to the store to buy a thing just because it's good for the environment you're doing more damage than if you'd just stayed home.

On the point of the Twitter point scoring, it's likely that the social team jumped on the news without knowing the plans for their own product lines, and it's also likely that the long lead times in product development meant that Samsung had already made the decision not to include the charger at the point Apple announced they weren't including one themselves.
